Happy Africa Day!

On this special day, we at Mt. Kenya Network Forum (MKNF) joined millions across the continent to honor Africa’s strength, resilience, and power by taking bold climate action right in our community.

This year’s theme, REPower Afrika, speaks to the urgent need for African communities to reclaim control of their energy systems — and to do so sustainably. That’s why we chose to mark Africa Day by installing community solar street lights in one of our project areas, bringing clean, safe, and affordable energy to the people!

Lighting the Way Forward

Under the powerful banner of #WeAreAfrikaVuka, we installed solar-powered street lights, a small but mighty step toward achieving energy justice for rural and underserved areas in Kenya.

These installations are already making a tangible difference:

Local pathways are now safer at night.
Women and youth feel more secure and active after dark.
Businesses can extend their operating hours and boost income.
And all of it is powered by the sun — no fossil fuels involved.

Energy access is not just about electricity. It is about dignity, safety, opportunity, and a just transition.

Why It Matters

Access to energy is not just about electricity — it’s about opportunity, dignity, and climate justice. Across Mt. Kenya and ASAL counties, our people continue to face challenges from poor infrastructure, rising costs of living, and climate-induced risks. By embracing renewable energy, we are:

✅ Reducing our carbon footprint
✅ Improving security and livelihoods
✅ Championing a just transition for all

Part of a Continental Movement

We’re proud to be part of the Afrika Vuka Network, mobilizing in over 20 African countries today. While we installed solar lights here in Kenya, our partners celebrated through art in Egypt, slam poetry in Togo, and youth energy cafés in Uganda.

Each action, whether big or small, pushes us closer to a fossil-free Africa.

The Work Continues

This is only the beginning. Mt. Kenya Network Forum is committed to expanding access to renewable energy, from solar pumps for community farms to demo centers and eco-schools.

Let’s use Africa Day to mobilize, organize, and energize our people for a better, brighter future.
