MT. KENYA NETWORK FORUM JOINS THE PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY TO DEMAND SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUALITY FOR ALL

Mt. Kenya Network Forum (MKNF) proudly joined activists, grassroots leaders, and movements across Kenya in the People’s Alternatives Assembly held on May 20, 2025, at Ufungamano House, Nairobi—a powerful gathering themed: “Kenyan Struggles in the Global Fight Against Inequality.”

Organized by the Fight Inequality Alliance – Kenya, this assembly brought together voices from urban settlements, rural communities, and climate-vulnerable regions like ours to demand economic justice, public accountability, and an end to policies that prioritize the wealthy while burdening the poor.

STANDING UP FOR GRASSROOTS POWER IN MT. KENYA & BEYOND

Mt. Kenya Network Forum’s work is rooted in social justice. From the forest zones of Nyeri to the drylands of Isiolo and Laikipia, our communities face daily challenges—land injustices, climate shocks, extractive industries, and under-resourced public services. Yet, these are the same communities being left behind by national budgets and policies.

By participating in the People’s Assembly, we:

  • Amplified rural and peri-urban voices from the Mt. Kenya region,
  • Shared our stories of resistance to inequality and fossil fuel projects,
  • Called for progressive taxationtaxing the rich, not the poor, and
  • Demanded public investments in climate resilience, education, and health.

WHY SOCIAL JUSTICE IS CLIMATE JUSTICE

As climate change worsens, inequality deepens. The same communities suffering droughts, floods, and land degradation are also the ones least protected by policy or investment. MKNF fights for climate justice as a social justice issue, ensuring that:

  • Women and youth are not left behind in adaptation efforts.
  • Resources reach the grassroots, not just elites or urban centers.
  • Fossil fuel interests don’t override the rights of communities.

VOICES THAT MOVED THE ASSEMBLY

The People’s Assembly featured powerful testimonies from frontline leaders, including:

  • Naomi Masai Chebet on the #FeesMustFall campaign,
  • Christine Ngoizi on community dreams and development,
  • Wanjira Wanjiru of the Mathare Social Justice Centre on urban struggles,
  • Policy insights from TISA and Bajeti Hub on where public funds go—and don’t go.

The day was not just about complaints—it was about hope, action, and solidarity.

OUR COMMITMENT GOING FORWARD

As part of our continued mission, Mt. Kenya Network Forum pledges to:

  • Push for inclusive budgeting that benefits grassroots communities,
  • Mobilize around the principle: “Nothing for us, without us,”
  • Connect local realities to global struggles against inequality and ecological breakdown.

CALL TO ACTION

We invite fellow civil society actors, media, policymakers, and donors to:

  • Listen to grassroots voices,
  • Support people-centered development, and
  • Join the fight for systemic change, not just symptoms.
