MT. KENYA NETWORK FORUM ADVANCES CLIMATE RESILIENCE PROJECTS WITH SUPPORT FROM THE MOVEMENTS TRUST

LAIKIPIA, NYERI & ISIOLO – The Mt. Kenya Network Forum (MKNF) has made significant strides in its mission to promote environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and social justice across Kenya, thanks in part to an unrestricted grant from The Movements Trust (TMT). This funding has enabled MKNF to expand its initiatives in learning institutions, green spaces, and places of worship, reinforcing its commitment to community-led climate action.

PROJECT PROGRESS & IMPACT

Since receiving the grant, MKNF has accelerated its Fruit Tree Nursery & Renewable Energy Demo Farm Initiative, with key achievements including:

✅ Expanded Tree Planting in Schools & Worship Centers – Over 5,000 fruit and indigenous tree seedlings planted in 50+ learning institutions and community spaces, fostering environmental education and food security.

✅ Renewable Energy Adoption – Installation of solar-powered water systems in 10 schools and community hubs, ensuring sustainable water access for irrigation and domestic use.

✅ Youth & Women’s Empowerment – Training 200+ youth and women in beekeeping, agroforestry, and renewable energy technologies, creating alternative livelihoods and reducing reliance on deforestation.

✅ Climate Advocacy – Strengthening legal efforts to hold the Kenyan government accountable for establishing the Climate Change Council, a critical body for inclusive climate governance under the Paris Agreement.

PARTNERSHIPS & FUTURE GOALS

MKNF’s collaboration with The Movements Trust and Climate 2025 has amplified its impact. Key next steps include:

  • Scaling reforestation efforts in Arid & Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) to combat land degradation.
  • Advocating for policy reforms to ensure community participation in climate decision-making.
  • Rebuilding flood-damaged infrastructure, including office equipment lost in recent disasters.
